The Ultimate Guide to Banking Exams in India: Eligibility, Syllabus & Salary
A Complete Guide to SBI, IBPS & RBI Recruitment Exams
India’s banking sector offers some of the most stable, prestigious and well-paying government job opportunities. Every year, lakhs of graduates compete for Probationary Officer, Clerk, Specialist Officer and Grade B posts through three main recruitment bodies: the State Bank of India (SBI), the Institute of Banking Personnel Selection (IBPS), and the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). This guide covers eligibility, exam pattern, selection process, salary and job profile for each, along with official links for further reading.
1. SBI (State Bank of India) — Probationary Officer (PO)
SBI conducts its own recruitment through the Central Recruitment and Promotion Department (CRPD), independent of IBPS. It is considered one of the most prestigious banking jobs in India because SBI is the country’s largest public sector bank, with over 23,270 branches nationwide.
Eligibility Criteria
- Nationality: Indian citizen (candidates from Nepal or Bhutan are also eligible, subject to conditions).
- Educational Qualification: Graduation in any discipline from a recognised university.
- Age Limit: 21 to 30 years as on the notified cut-off date.
- Age Relaxation: 5 years for SC/ST, 3 years for OBC (Non-Creamy Layer), and up to 15 years for PwBD candidates, as per government norms.
- Number of Attempts: General/EWS candidates get 6 attempts; OBC/PwBD candidates get 9 attempts; SC/ST candidates have no cap on attempts, subject to the age limit.
Exam Pattern
Phase I — Preliminary Examination (100 marks, 1 hour)
| Section | Questions | Marks | Duration |
| English Language | 30 | 30 | 20 minutes |
| Quantitative Aptitude | 35 | 35 | 20 minutes |
| Reasoning Ability | 35 | 35 | 20 minutes |
| Total | 100 | 100 | 1 hour |
Prelims is a screening round only — marks are not added to the final merit; candidates must simply clear the sectional and overall cut-offs to move to Mains.
Phase II — Main Examination (230 marks, ~3 hours)
| Section | Questions | Marks | Duration |
| Reasoning & Computer Aptitude | 45 | 60 | 60 minutes |
| Data Analysis & Interpretation | 35 | 60 | 45 minutes |
| General/Economy/Banking Awareness | 40 | 40 | 35 minutes |
| English Language | 35 | 40 | 40 minutes |

| Descriptive Test (Letter + Essay) | 2 | 30 | 30 minutes |
Negative marking of 0.25 marks applies for every wrong answer in the objective sections of both Prelims and Mains. There is no penalty for unattempted questions.
Phase III — Group Exercise, Psychometric Test & Interview
- Candidates who clear Mains are called for a Group Exercise (20 marks) and Personal Interview (30 marks).
- A Psychometric Test is also conducted but is not scored — it assesses personality traits and cultural fit.
- SBI may digitally capture thumb impressions during the process to verify candidate authenticity.
Selection Process (Summary)
- Step 1: Online Preliminary Examination (qualifying only).
- Step 2: Online Main Examination — objective + descriptive (this score counts toward merit).
- Step 3: Group Exercise & Interview — combined with Mains score for final merit.
- Step 4: Final merit list, document verification, and medical examination before joining.
Final Selection Formula: Mains (Objective + Descriptive) marks + Group Exercise & Interview marks, normalised and combined to prepare the final merit list. There is no fixed weightage ratio published for SBI PO (unlike IBPS PO’s 80:20 split) — SBI applies its own normalisation method each year.

- Starting Basic Pay: ₹48,480 per month (₹56,480 with two advance increments for existing bank employees/officers).
- In-hand Salary: Approximately ₹80,000–85,000 per month, depending on posting location and applicable allowances (DA, HRA, CCA, etc.).

2. IBPS (Institute of Banking Personnel Selection)
IBPS conducts the Common Recruitment Process (CRP) for Probationary Officer/Management Trainee (PO/MT), Clerk, Specialist Officer (SO), and Regional Rural Bank (RRB) posts across participating public sector banks — every major PSU bank except SBI. IBPS PO 2026 (CRP PO/MT-XVI) is the 16th edition of this exam and has seen a significant jump in vacancies this year.
Eligibility Criteria (IBPS PO)
- Educational Qualification: Graduation in any discipline from a recognised university.
- Age Limit: 20 to 30 years as on the notified cut-off date.
- Nationality: Indian citizen, or a person of Indian origin who has migrated from Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Burma, Vietnam, Ethiopia, Kenya, Malawi, Tanzania, Zaire or Zambia with the intention of permanently settling in India.
- Computer Knowledge: Basic computer literacy is expected, given the digital nature of banking operations.
- Age relaxations apply for SC/ST, OBC, PwBD, ex-servicemen and other reserved categories as per government norms.
Exam Pattern
Preliminary Examination (100 marks, 1 hour) — Qualifying only
| Section | Questions | Marks | Duration |

- Negative Marking: One-fourth (0.25) of the marks assigned to a question is deducted for each wrong answer in the objective tests.
- No penalty is applied for questions left unanswered.
Personality Test & Interview
- The Personality Test is mandatory but non-qualifying — candidates must appear for it to remain eligible for the Interview.
- Candidates who clear Mains are called for a common Interview conducted by the participating banks/IBPS.
Selection Process (Summary)
- Step 1: Online Preliminary Examination (qualifying, not counted in final merit).
- Step 2: Online Main Examination — objective + descriptive.

- Step 4: Provisional Allotment to a participating bank, based on merit rank and preference.
Final Merit Weightage: Main Examination and Interview scores are combined in an 80:20 ratio to prepare the final merit list. Marks scored in Prelims are used only to qualify for Mains and do not carry forward.
Salary & Job Profile
- Starting Basic Pay: In line with the IBA (Indian Banks’ Association) officer pay scale for JMGS-I, broadly comparable to SBI’s structure with minor variation by participating bank.
- In-hand Salary: Typically around ₹52,000–60,000 per month depending on the allotted bank and posting city (metro/urban/rural allowances differ).
- Grade on Joining: Junior Management Grade Scale-I (Probationary Officer / Management Trainee).
- Job Profile: Similar to SBI PO — branch operations, credit and loan appraisal, customer service, cross-selling, cash and forex handling, and eventually managerial/supervisory responsibilities.
- Career Growth: Clear promotion path through Scale II and III officer grades, with further movement into specialised or senior management roles over the career.
Note: IBPS also conducts separate recruitment exams for Clerk (Customer Service Associate), Specialist Officer (SO — IT, Law, HR, Marketing, Agriculture etc.), and Regional Rural Bank (RRB) posts. These follow a similar Prelims + Mains structure but with variations — for example, IBPS Clerk has no descriptive paper and no separate interview in most participating banks.

3. RBI (Reserve Bank of India) — Grade B Officer
The RBI Grade B exam recruits Managers (Grade B) directly into India’s central bank — a role distinct from PSU commercial banking, focused on monetary policy, banking regulation, and economic research. It is widely regarded as one of the most prestigious and selective banking-sector exams in the country, with vacancies typically in the range of a few dozen to a few hundred each year across three streams: General, DEPR (Department of Economic and Policy Research), and DSIM (Department of Statistics and Information Management).
Eligibility Criteria
- Educational Qualification (General stream): A minimum of 50% marks (aggregate) in graduation in any discipline from a recognised university; requirements differ for the specialised DEPR (Economics/Econometrics postgraduate) and DSIM (Statistics/Mathematics postgraduate) streams.
- Age Limit: Generally 21 to 30 years as on the notified cut-off date.
- Age Relaxation: Standard relaxations apply for SC/ST (5 years), OBC (3 years), PwBD and other categories as per government rules.
- Nationality: Indian citizen.
Exam Pattern
Phase I — Preliminary Examination (200 marks, 2 hours) — Qualifying only
| Section | Questions | Marks |
| General Awareness | 80 | 80 |
| Quantitative Aptitude | 30 | 30 |
| Reasoning | 60 | 60 |
| English Language | 30 | 30 |
| Total | 200 | 200 |
Phase I is objective, with sectional timing and a negative marking penalty of one-fourth (0.25) per wrong answer. It is purely a screening stage — marks are not carried forward to the final merit list.
Phase II — Main Examination (Objective + Descriptive)
- Paper I: Economic & Social Issues (ESI) — objective and descriptive components.
- Paper II: English (Writing Skills) — fully descriptive, testing essay, précis and comprehension ability.
- Paper III: Finance & Management (for General stream) or specialised Economics/Statistics papers (for DEPR/DSIM streams).
Only Phase II marks (Papers I, II, III) count toward the final selection, along with the Interview score.
Psychometric Test & Interview
- Candidates who clear Phase II undergo a Psychometric Test — this is not scored but is used to assess personality fit.
- This is followed by a Personal Interview worth 75 marks, which can be attempted in Hindi or English.
Selection Process (Summary)
- Step 1: Phase I — Preliminary online exam (screening only).
- Step 2: Phase II — Main exam (objective + descriptive papers), marks counted for merit.
- Step 3: Psychometric Test (non-scored) followed by Interview (75 marks).
- Step 4: Final merit list based on aggregate of Phase II + Interview marks; document verification and medical examination follow.

- Basic Pay: Around ₹78,450 per month, with in-hand pay close to ₹1.16–1.23 lakh depending on posting and allowances.
- Important Distinction: RBI Grade B officers are not on the standard IBA/PSU bank pay scale — RBI maintains its own, separate and higher pay structure as the country’s central bank.
- Job Profile: Formulating and implementing monetary policy, regulating and supervising commercial banks and NBFCs, managing currency operations, conducting economic and statistical research (DEPR/DSIM streams), and other core central-banking functions.
- Career Growth: Strong long-term progression toward Assistant General Manager, Deputy General Manager, General Manager, and eventually Executive Director-level roles within RBI.
- Additional Perks: Official accommodation or HRA, medical benefits, pension, and other central-bank-grade allowances that are generally more generous than PSU bank scales.
